How To Remove Dual Boot in Windows – Get rid of the second OS

Steps to remove dual boot in Windows:

If you’ve properly installed a second operating system on your computer, there’s probably a folder containing its files on a separate partition. First step of getting rid of the second OS is as simple as deleting that folder. If you’ve been really smart and also installed all programs for that operating system in another partition, away from the program files of your primary operating system, then it’s wiser to just format that partition. In case your program files are mixed up, you will have to manually delete them.
Now, to remove the prompt at the boot screen, here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Go to Start menu.

Step 2: Click Run (in case of Windows XP, Vista and 7) or right click the bottom left corner and click Run (in case of Windows 8).

Step 3: Type “msconfig”

Step 4: Go to the Boot tab. You should see your operating systems listed, with one being the Default OS. If the Default OS isn’t the one you want, simply highlight your primary OS and click “Set as Default”.

Step 5: Now highlight your secondary OS and click “Delete”.

That’s it, now your PC won’t prompt on boot to select an operating system.

How to Connect to Console Session with Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services

In Windows Server 2003, when you use Terminal Services, you can connect to the console session (session 0), and at the same time, open a shadow session to it (as long as you connect from a session other than the console). With this added functionality, you can log on to a Windows Server 2003-based server that is running Terminal Services remotely and interact with session 0 as if you were sitting at the physical console of the computer. This session can also be shadowed so that the remote user and the local user at the physical console can see and interact with the same session.

How to Connect to the Console Session

When you connect to the console session of a Windows Server 2003-based server, no other user has to be already logged on to the console session. Even if no one is logged on to the console, you are logged on just as if you were sitting at the physical console.

To connect from the remote Windows Server 2003-based computer, open a command prompt, and then type the following command:
mstsc -v:servername /F -console
where mstsc is the Remote Desktop connection executable file, -v indicates a server to connect to, /F indicates full screen mode, and -console is the instruction to connect to the console session.

When you use this command, you open the Remote Desktop session, and when the logon is authenticated, you are connected to the console session that is running on the Windows Server 2003-based server. If a user is currently working on the console session at the computer, you receive the following error message:
The user domain\username is logged locally on to this computer. The user has been idled for number minutes. The desktop is unlocked. If you continue, this user's session will end and any unsaved data will be lost. Do you want to continue?
The user of the current console session is then logged off, and you receive a message that states that the computer is currently locked and only an administrator can unlock it.

Note: If the console session user and the Terminal Services session user are the same, you can connect without any problems.

  5. On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem and, if it is necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

Tips for using Windows 8

The new Windows 8 operating system is now available and it faces users with a lot of changes. There is, for example, no start menu and no task bar on the start screen, which has tiles instead.
Those who would like to switch between programmes must instead move the mouse into the lower left corner of the screen and move downwards. Then a list of recently opened programmes pops up. To use two programmes at the same time, users must drag an application from this list next to the one that’s already opened.
Other important functions are also hidden in the corners of the display for mouse users. If you move the pointer to the lower or upper right, the new Charm Bar opens. This allows users for example to look for files and share them with others on the internet. The Settings includes the control panel, which has the function to shut the computer down.
Microsoft has collected other tips in dealing with its new user interface and put them on its support website. Among the hints is how to close a programme — by clicking on it and dragging it from the top of the screen to the bottom.
But this step is not actually necessary according to the developers as the system does not slow down if many programmes are open. The usual classic programmes meanwhile run like normal on the desktop, complete with task bar and X button in the upper right corner to close it. You can reach the desktop by clicking on the corresponding tile or by using the key combination Windows and D.
Those who would like to get there directly when they start up must use some tricks, according to German computer magazine c’t. The free open source program Classic Shell can be used so that no tile pops up when the computer is started. It can also reconstruct the old start menu — or at least a copy that looks similar. And users can decide which programmes, folders and files are included in the menu.

Microsoft offers Windows 8 for Rs 1,999 to cajole users of pirated OS

NEW DELHI: Offer a sophisticated operating system for the price of a pair of branded jeans. This seems to be Microsoft's strategy to cajole millions of users running pirated copies of its flagship Windows operating system (OS) to turn a leaf and become legitimate, paying customers.
The Redmond, Washington-based software giant is offering a deep discount on Windows 8 for a few months, selling a copy priced at Rs 11,999 for Rs 1,999. From a computer that runs Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 - pirated or otherwise - users can download a licensed copy of Windows 8 Pro, the version with all the bells and whistles, for an 83% discount. No questions asked.

The offer is valid till January 31, 2013. An upgrade DVD costs Rs 3,499 and if you bought a Windows 7 computer after June 2012, an upgrade is yours for Rs 699.

Microsoft
is silent on whether this is a security loophole or a deliberate strategy. Company officials declined comment. Raju PP, editor of tech blog Techpp.com, who installed Windows 8 on a non-activated Windows 7 installation by paying Rs 1,999, said: "I have strong reasons to believe that this was a deliberate move to push up initial sales. Microsoft is big and wise enough to do a basic check for legitimacy of Windows 7 installation. They could have done a background check of the installation or could have asked for the Windows 7 licence key. But they didn't".
For years, the hordes of users who used pirated copies of the flagship Windows OS represented a tricky knot for software giant Microsoft. They were potentially robbing the company of billions of dollars in revenue. And yet, cracking down would have made them turn to free, open-source platforms.

This would have diluted the immense network effect that benefits Microsoft and helps preserve its market dominance. So, Microsoft mostly cracked down on piracy among companies and enterprise users and left personal users alone.

That seems to be changing as the company unveiled Windows 8, a touchscreen-optimised OS that marks a radical departure in its user interface to usher in a tile-based system common to personal computers, tablets and mobile devices. With these upgrade offers, within four days of its launch, 4 million licences of Windows 8 have been bought and downloaded globally.

The deep discount is likely to find many takers among users in emerging economies who run pirated versions of the OS. "They are obviously trying to lure pirated users, which is a big market. Not many enterprises plan to move to Windows 8 as they are still in the process of moving from Windows XP to Windows 7. Microsoft is trying to tap into the big market of pirated Windows, which is much bigger than their enterprise market," said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst, Gartner.

As per Netmarkershare.com, Windows currently has over 80% market share worldwide in
desktop OS. The main reason for piracy is the high price of a legitimate Windows copy. A genuine Windows 7 OS costs at least 5,000 (Home Basic) even today, while a pirated copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, legally priced at 11,488, can be bought for a few hundred rupees in the grey market. There has been great consumer interest in Windows 8, which clocked 16 million downloads for preview.

10 Most Useful Microsoft Word 2010 Tips & Tricks

Microsoft Word 2010 is one of our favorite text editors. With such a big array of features, Microsoft Office Word 2010 can look complicated. There are many hidden tricks and shortcuts that make text editing easier. Here are some tips I think will help you when you are using Microsoft Word 2010.

1. Vertical Selection Of Text
Normally, we select a character, a word, a sentence or a paragraph. All these selections are horizontal selections. Sometimes you may need to select vertically. For example, if your text has numbers in the beginning, you may want to select only the numbers to delete them at one go (see figure).

To select text horizontally, press ALT and click to drag and make a selection. Remember to release ALT key before releasing mouse else it will open the Research dialog. Check out the different uses of vertical selections and let us know what all you did with this feature.
2. Default Line Spacing
The default line spacing in Microsoft Word 2010 is 1.15 against 1 in Microsoft Word 2003. Microsoft changed the line spacing to make your text more readable. If you want the default line spacing as 1, follow this procedure:
1.    While on the Home tab, right click on the Normal quick style button and select Modify
2.    In the Format list that appears, select Paragraph
3.    Under spacing, change the line spacing from 1.15 to 1
4.    Click OK
5.    Check the box against “New documents based on this template”
6.    Click OK

3. Changing The Default Save Location
By default, MS Word opens Documents folder when you press CTRL+S for first time. If you think this is irritating you, you can change the default file location to some other place where you normally store your documents.
1.    Click on File
2.    Click on Options
3.    Click Advanced in the left side of the window that appears
4.    In the right part of the window, scroll down to the button that says “File Locations”
5.    Select Documents and click on Modify
6.    In the Save File dialog box that appears, enter or select the new path and click on OK to close the Save File dialog box.
7.    Click OK to close the window.

4. Change Default Font
The default font for new documents in MS Word 2010 is Calibri. Though the font is good for online viewing, it creates problems when printing. You may be using Times New Roman or Arial for print jobs. One method is to change the font manually each time after you have typed the document. But then, it would involve formatting the document again. Another method is to change the default font.
1.    Right click on the Normal quick style button on Home tab.
2.    Click Modify
3.    In the dialog box that appears, click on Format… to open the drop down menu and select Font
4.    In the Font dialog box, select the font you wish to use with every document.
5.    Make any other changes you wish such as font size etc
6.    Click OK
7.    Click to select “New documents based on this template”
8.    Click OK to close the Modify dialog box.

5. Move Rows Of Text In Table
Sometimes when you are working on the table, you may want to move one or more rows in the table up or down without having to change the table formatting. One method is copy pasting but that risks formatting.
Another method is using ALT+SHIFT+UP arrow key to move entire row up. Similarly, to move the entire row down, use ALT+SHIFT+DN arrow key. Note that you have to select the row before you can move it using the ALT+SHIFT+Arrow keys. This method makes sure the formatting is not disturbed.

6. Quickly Change Line Spacing
Sometimes need arises that you have to change line spacing among different paragraphs. Here are the shortcut keys:
CTRL + 1 –> Change line spacing to 1
CTRL + 2 –> Change line spacing to 2
CTRL + 5 –> Change line spacing to 1.5
Note that you just need to place the cursor on the paragraph that needs to be styled. You need not select the paragraph.
7. Quickly Adding Borders to Paragraphs
If you wish to add borders to some paragraph, you can use the Borders and Shading dialog box. However, if your need is just to add bottom border to text/paragraph, you can do it by adding three special characters and hitting Enter.
Press – (hyphen) three times and press Enter to draw an underline border of 3/4 points
Press _ (underscore) three times and press Enter to draw an underline border of 1.5 points
Press ~ (tilde) three times and press Enter to draw a zigzag underline border
Press * (asterisk) three times and press Enter to draw a dotted underline border
Press = (equal to) three times and press Enter to draw a double underline border
8. Find Special Formatting
You can find text that is specially formatted. For example, you can find highlighted text or text whose font is Times New Roman. You can also search for bold text or italics. There are many more options when you use the Find option.
1.    Press CTRL+F to open the Find pane. In Word 2010 it appears to the left side of the window.
2.    Click on the down facing triangle next to magnifying glass and click on Advanced Find…
3.    In the Find dialog box that appears, click on More.
4.    You can see plenty of options under Format.
5.    When you select anything, it appears under the “Find What” textbox. When you click Find Next without entering anything in the “Find What” text box, it searches for the format you have selected. For example, you can select Font and in the Font dialog box, select a font and its properties (bold, italics etc).

9. Merging Formatting When Pasting Across Documents
When you copy anything from another document and paste it in the current document, you will want the copied text to match the formatting of the current document. While you can manually format each time you copy text from other documents to the current one, you can also set the default paste to merge formatting so that the text copied from other sources acquires formatting of current document.
1.    To set the default formatting, click on the down facing triangle below Paste on Home tab
2.    Click Set Default Paste
3.    In the window that appears, Select Merge Destinations in: 1: When Pasting in Same Document and 2: When Pasting between Documents.
4.    Click OK to close the window

10. Copy Only Formatting
Sometimes you may want to apply an already existing formatting from one part of your document to another part. You have the Format Painter for the purpose. Using the Format Painter can be irritating when dealing with long documents.  Here is another method that is easier to use.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+C instead of CTRL+C. This will copy only the formatting and leave the text.
Move to the destination where the formatting is to be applied. Select the text to which formatting is to be applied. Press CTRL+SHIFT+V to paste the formatting to the selection.
Above are some Microsoft Word 2010 tips and tricks that make your working on the editor easy. If you have anything to share, please use the comments section.
