Good response to post office on wheels in Pune

PUNE : Department of posts has received significant response from residents of the city to its second 'post office on wheels' vehicle that was flagged off around two months ago. The vehicle is offering postal services at the doorsteps of people in eastern parts of the city as well as in major residential areas in Pimpri Chinchwad.

The official of department of posts said that response has been tremendous especially in the outskirts areas where the department has not been able to set up post offices. The official said that the project is being run successfully in the city since last year when first 'post office on wheels' vehicle was launched to cater to the needs of city's western parts.
The department keep changing schedules of two vehicles for every week. The schedule is announced one week prior so that people from respective areas will be able to avail of the services. The vehicle runs in two shifts---morning and evening---in a day covering major residential colonies and roads. It offers almost all postal services including sale of postal stationery like postcards.

An official said that the 'post office on wheels' projects has proved beneficial for elderly people, students and housewives who can get the postal services at doorsteps. The department plans to expand services of the vehicle in the near future.

India post releases commemorative stamps on London Olympics

LUCKNOW: In a bid to make London Olympics 2012 truly memorable for all particularly sports lovers and philatelists, the department of post has come up with a set of four commemorative stamps that have captured the spirit of sportsmanship. Department of posts, has issued a set of four commemorative postal stamps and a souvenir sheet on London Olympics.

The set of four stamps show sports persons engaged in games like volleyball, rowing, sailing and badminton. Director, postal headquarters, UP, Sachin Kishor informed reporters that the stamps and souvenir sheet symbolize the athletic spirit. "The stamps would be available at the philatelic bureau at the general post office (GPO) and other post offices across the state.

The two stamps with pictures of rowing and sailing are available for R 5 each and those with images of volleyball and badminton can be purchased for Rs 20 each," he said. Four lakh of each stamp and 20,000 souvenir sheets were printed at India Security Press, Nasik, Maharashtra.

Postal stamps are released every month by the India Post. While some are based on events, others are dedicated to people, monuments, great personalities, places, art pieces or important objects. "For mega international events, a number of countries issue postal stamps.

It is a way of paying tribute and saluting the spirit," said an official of the philately bureau at the GPO. It may be noted that the trend of issuing stamps based on sports started in 1968 and the department has been issuing stamps on Olympics ever since.

Re-Designed Website of the President of India

The re-designed website of the President of India was launched at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. While the historical perspectives from the earlier websites have been retained, the re-designed website has some new features, which include direct connectivity from the website to social networking media of the President i.e. Facebook and You-Tube. These two features have been initiated after assumption of charge by the President Mr.Pranab Mukherjee. The new website also has a Video Gallery. Citizens can connect to the President directly by clicking the button ‘Write to the President’, which will take them directly to the helpline portal. Moreover, visuals have been conceptualized and made user friendly.

Launching the website, Secretary to the President, Ms. Omita Paul expressed the hope that it would be a step forward to bring the President of India closer to the people. She also said that efforts would be made to ensure that the website is in line with the best global practices.
