LUCKNOW: In a bid to make London Olympics 2012 truly memorable for all particularly sports lovers and philatelists, the department of post has come up with a set of four commemorative stamps
that have captured the spirit of sportsmanship. Department of posts,
has issued a set of four commemorative postal stamps and a souvenir
sheet on London Olympics.
The set of four stamps show sports persons engaged in games like volleyball, rowing, sailing and badminton. Director, postal headquarters, UP, Sachin Kishor informed reporters that the stamps and souvenir sheet symbolize the athletic spirit. "The stamps would be available at the philatelic bureau at the general post office (GPO) and other post offices across the state.
The two stamps with pictures of rowing and sailing are available for R 5 each and those with images of volleyball and badminton can be purchased for Rs 20 each," he said. Four lakh of each stamp and 20,000 souvenir sheets were printed at India Security Press, Nasik, Maharashtra.
Postal stamps are released every month by the India Post. While some are based on events, others are dedicated to people, monuments, great personalities, places, art pieces or important objects. "For mega international events, a number of countries issue postal stamps.
It is a way of paying tribute and saluting the spirit," said an official of the philately bureau at the GPO. It may be noted that the trend of issuing stamps based on sports started in 1968 and the department has been issuing stamps on Olympics ever since.
