Haryana is set to get a national law university within the campus of Rajiv Gandhi Education City at Sonepat. A legislation to this effect will be brought in the Assembly commencing on Thursday.
The proposed university will focus on providing facilities for advanced studies in all branches of law. At present, there are only 14 national law universities in the country.
The university will be developed on an area of 27 acres at a cost of Rs 110 crore, to be borne by the state government. With a capacity of 100 to 120 seats, it will provide degrees in graduation and postgraduation. The state government plans to start the university from the current session.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, himself a law graduate, has taken keen interest in getting the decks cleared for the university.
The government has already decided to form an inter-university association to discuss academic and other issues pertaining to the university.
Once the Assembly okays Bill, the association will discuss syllabus, academic calendars, examination and result schedules.
The government has chosen Rajiv Gandhi Education City as the site for the university, as major educational universities had not come up to set shop there. Moreover, land was readily available in the Education City.
This budget session will also witness many changes in the present universities, as the state is set to bring in amendment legislations for Kurukshetra University, Maharishi Dayanand University Rohtak, Chaudhary Devi Lal University Sirsa, Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishvavidyalaya, Khanpur Kalan and the Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Bill-2012.
