MOUNT EVEREST POST OFFICE

China Post has set up a new Post Office in May 2001 in the Rongbuk Valley at the North Base Camp for Mount Everest. It is open from 11am to 4pm every day from April to August. It costs 3 yuan to send a letter to Beijing, and 9 yuan for England.

During the mountaineering season, the clerk who is responsible for liaison with Tibet Mountaineering Association resides there, from whom one can buy a little food and water.

At 17,060 feet it is claimed to be the world's Highest Post Office. However, Hikkim Post Office in Himachal at 15,000 ft. retains its status as the highest all-weather Post Office with full functionalities.
